Serpentin garden is a fairytale in Pelion, below the village of Tsagarada that awaits your visit. It is an ongoing work of art, ever changing and growing, the creation of Doris Schlepper who came to Pelion over thirty years ago. You’ll find rare trees and wonderful plants in a series of garden “rooms” on different levels of terraces, interspersed with quirky sculptures indicative of Doris’s playfulness and artistic eye. Winding “Serpentine” paths lead around the garden to pools, fountains and ponds, vegetable and herb gardens, bamboo groves and spectacular Irises, climbing roses and exotic plants from around the world. You’ll also find a sweet menagerie geese, cats and a dog along with cardboard sheep grazing on grass.
Her beautifully restored farmhouse dating from 1731 and still sporting the original Cyprus beams and floorboards in some areas is a gem and another ongoing creation by Doris whose artistic spirit never stops adding touches to.
It’s literally an enchanted place where Doris is the princess of her kingdom and castle.
Visits are by appointment only and there is a small entrance fee. Doris also makes delicious jam from her organically grown fruit and berries. Don’t worry about having to pack it to bring home, you’re guaranteed to finish the jam before you leave as it is irresistible.
Tsagarada itself is a beautiful traditional stone village in North East Pelion well worth visiting. Combine seeing Serpentin with coffee under a 1000 year old plane tree in the square of Tsagarada for an unforgettable day trip.
