Beaches of Pelion in the South West

Liiterally down the road from us, the beaches in South West Pelion are mostly tranquil, secret coves with fine pebbles and cristalline waters perfect for snorkelling. You can spend the day beach hopping until you reach either O Aggelos in Kottes or Manolas in Agios Kyriaki for a fantastic seafood meal right on the water.

Marathias beach

A lovely, full service beach with tavernas that tends to fill up in August but is otherwise empty the rest of the time.

Tzasteni Bay

So picturesque that it is on all of the picture postcards of South Pelion. Yet somehow, it is almost never crowded, perhaps because it takes a wee bit of effort to get to it. If you don’t fancy the scramble down you can visit the adjacent beach which is accessible via a steep concrete driveway. Just park at the entrance and walk down.

Here’s where you can take a water taxi to Trikeri Island. Park in the shade, call the taxi and take a dip in the gorgeous blue waters while waiting to be ferried across the bay. No cars are allowed on Trikeri so expect perfect peace. The whole island can be explored on foot and is dotted with its own bays and beaches.

Alatas Island

Just across the bay from us it is dotted with gorgeous pebbled coves. See the remains of a beautiful monastery, now home to a flock of goats only, If you don’t feel like paddling over with our kayaks you can always rent a small boat from En Plo in Milina.

Beaches of Pelion in the South East

If your idea of the perfect beach is a sweeping bay with fine, golden sands then head to South East Pelion:

Mikro

A big and beautiful bay not too far from Happinest. It’s main attraction as far as we are concerned is the fab taverna right on the beach: Aiolos. Combine a swim and lunch. Leave your umbrella on the beach so that you can trot back for a siesta and another dip after your meal… You’ll also love your genial host and proprietor Stathis who looks like he stepped straight out of a Greek movie!

Karavaki Beach

Paradise on earth… It’s a hike down but well worth it because it means that you will probably be by yourselves. Bring water and be prepared to spend the day, you won’t want to leave. The other big plus about this place is that it is right next to Mikro beach where the wonderful taverna Aiolos can be found. Have a great meal after a day in paradise, it doesn’t get better than that!

Vlahorema Beach

A hidden, fine sand beach nestled among pine trees. Access is a 15 minute walk through an easy path from nearby Katigiorgis. Be sure to load the Google Map of the area before you leave as Internet connection is spotty there. The double attraction is the taverna of Areti and Stamoulis in Katigiorgi where you can trust Stamouli to just bring a selection of his mezes…Perfect with a cold beer or a chilled glass of white wine.

Potistika

The beaches on this coast are famous for their fine, golden sand and unusual rock formations that add drama to the scenery. Sadly Sorm Daniel from 2023 destroyed many of the beaches, washing down debris and cutting off access. Potistika is still thriving thanks to the immense efforts of the local residents who formed a group to clean up and paid for the expenses themselves. It’s popular in the weekends and high season though.

If you make decide to see North East Pelion then Milopotamos is a must. At the foot of the village of Tsagarada where you can have coffee under the 1000 year old immense plane tree, it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. As it is very famous, it does tend to get crowded in the high season but it is well worth a visit any time before July and after August far from the Madding crowd.

Fakistra Beach

It’s called a “hidden gem” and with good reason. You can’t expect paradiset to also be easily accessible by car, otherwise it would be overrun. On this page of the excellent concious travel blog travellersanddreamers.com you will find a full description of the beach and how to get there.

Damouchari

The beach and the village rocketed to fame when it was chosen as the location for the movie Mamma Mia. Whether you are a fan of Abba and Meryl Streep’s singing abilities notwithstanding, it’s simply charming.

Plaka Beach

Next to touristy Agios Ioannis, it can be reached by a foot path from said beach. Beware though, since Storm Daniel, visitors have reported that the going is more difficult now. Bring good footwear. You can also drive there and park in the hotel but you will have to pay for parking and the use of a sunbed. Even so, the natural shade from trees from 2pm onwards and the translucent water have some calling this their favourite beach in Pelion. You decide!

Agioi Saranta

Just your average drop dead gorgeous beach with white sand and turquoise waters. As there is parking and a few beach bars, expect to see some people during the high season, especially on the weekends. Visitors have reported that parking can be an issue then. However the rest of the time, this is a beach that you can drive straight up to. The advantage of a full service beach like this is that you don’t need to bring supplies or equipment. You can even rent canoes and kayaks to explore the area.
