Imagine the unimaginable in today’s modern world: an island with no cars. That’s exactly what Trikeri Island or Palaio Trikeri is. It’s tiny and criss-crossed by paths so that you can explore easily. Be prepared to startle some pheasants. Visit the Convent of Panagia Evangelistria on your way to Prasini Amnos (literally “green sand”) beach.
If you are interested in history, Trikeri island hides a dark secret: it was not always a haven of peace. During and after the Greek civil war it was used as a forced labour camp. The camp closed in 1953 and lies only as a tragic memory of the distant past.
To get there from Happinest you drive south along the sea road until Alogoporos where you call for a water taxi. The boat ride is only about 10 minutes and utterly enjoyable. Alogoporos also has a lovely beach and a taverna to hangout at while you wait for the boat to arrive.
A wonderful ending to this day trip would be to have dinner at Agios Kyriaki at the best seafood taverna in Pelion. Manolas is one of our recommendations for dining in Pelion. Agios Kyriaki is a charming fishing village reminiscent of Greece 30 years ago and is particularly delightful to stroll through after a filling meal. We’d be happy to call Manolas to make a reservation for you.
